Materials: (Back to Lab)
-
5 - 250 mL flasks labeled A - E (1 flask per group of 4 students works
best)
-
9 - 10 mL graduated cylinders
-
9 metal scoops
-
5 rubber stoppers, with one hole opening, per class
-
5 balloons for each class
-
6 individual packets of dry yeast from the grocery store is enough for
25 flasks
-
sugar
-
salt
-
thermometer
-
beaker of water (microwave 1000 mL for 3 min for 38 degrees Celsius) I
poured the water for each group.
Tips for Running the Lab:
Introduce and go over procedures with class
Break into lab teams A - E
Make 3 stations:
Yeast Station with 3 graduated cylinders, 3 scoops.
Sugar Station with 3 graduated cylinders, 3 scoops.
Salt Station with 3 graduated cylinders, 3 scoops.
Call up one person from each group with their flask to the sugar station,
when they are done then
Call up a different person from each group to the salt station...
Call up a different person from each group to the yeast station...
Call up a different person from each group to get the warm water.
Due to time constraints, we let the flasks sit overnight and took measurements
the next day.
The balloons were inflated for flasks A, B, and C, : D and E were not
inflated.
I brought all 25 flasks to each class and had each student measure
one flask and place their data on the board.
Discuss results.Good Luck! Please email me
if you have any questions.
